This work is one of a handful of ‘spin-offs’ from the choral drama SALVAT 1701 (2001) by Jaakko Mäntyjärvi, a semi-dramatic 70-minute work based on hymns from the Finnish Old Hymnal of 1701. The hymn tune in the present instance is an early 16th-century German hymn that appeared in Swedish and Finnish hymnals towards the end of that century. The text source for the present work is the Swedish hymnal of 1695. As in SALVAT, the hymn tune itself is never varied, rather, it is treated to a variety of environments and textures that envelop and highlight it. Technically, the piece is a hymn motet.
