nine dawn watercolours * nine sunset watercolours
Mäntyjärvi Jaakko7,87€
Description
This work is a variable-structure piece whose nine fragments may be performed in the order 1 to 9 (dawn) following the score from front to back or 9 to 1 (sunset) following the score from back to front, with the minor text changes indicated in the score. The musical content of the watercolours is of course not reversed, just their order.
Each fragment is set for a quartet of voices. The S/A and T/B distinctions are less relevant in the mid-range parts than in the extreme parts; singers may be assigned according to the ranges they are comfortable with.
The ideal ensemble for performing the piece, and the one assumed in the score, consists of nine quartets, i.e. 36 singers: 10 sopranos, 8 altos, 8 tenors and 10 basses.
The recommended minimum for performing the musical content of the piece is 3 sopranos, 2 altos, 2 tenors and 3 basses – the absolute minimum for performing the musical content of the piece is 4 women and 4 men.
The work is a joint commission of two choirs: Exmoor Singers (London, UK) and The Esoterics (Seattle, WA, USA).
Year of composition 2010. Duration ca. 10′
