“Maddalena Casulana (ca. 1544-1590) composed a festive motet to a text by Nicolas Stopio for performance, in her presence and under the direction of Orlando di Lasso, at the wedding of Prince Wilhelm of Bavaria and Renata of Lothringen on 28 February 1568. Motets by Lasso himself and by Catarina Willaert were also performed on that occasion. I would very much have liked to hear Maddalena’s piece, but sadly only the text survives. Therefore, I took the liberty of imagining what it might have sounded like.”
