Grim and glacial funeral waltzes
Description
Commissioned by the Helsinki University Chorus (YL). Year of composition 2002. Duration 6′
…think of moonlight and Hugo Simberg…
French composer Erik Satie and Finnish Symbolist painter Hugo Simberg are the main components in the image that this fragile frozen thing is intended to conjure up. Are there really ghosts dancing in the moonlight, or is it just your imagination playing tricks? A Romantic scene with ancient overtones, including an appearance by the Funeral Hymn of Seikilos, one of the oldest preserved pieces in the history of European music. The title was invented by my son Valtteri, nine years old at the time. Executive summary: Gymnopédie meets Valse triste, with a twist.
På svenska: Grymma och långsamma begravningsvalser
Auf deutsch: Langsame grausame Begräbnings walzer
