“First Ten Waka from the Ogura Hyakunin Isshu” is a variable-structure piece where the ten poems (waka) may be performed in any order, separated by nine interludes that may be freely chosen from a set of five Interludes provided. Since the ten poems may be arranged in 3 628 800 different ways and the interludes may be chosen in 1 953 125 different ways, there are theoretically more than 7 trillion ways in which this piece may be assembled for performance.
Performing this piece there are “small instruments” needed. In the score they are determined as “wood”, “metal” and “paper”.
