The Supper
Description
Commissioned by Chamber Choir Hymnia (Copenhagen, Denmark) in honour of the 500th anniversary of the death of Leonardo da Vinci.
Year of composition 2018. Duration 5′
Rilke’s poem Das Abendmahl was inspired by Leonardo’s Last Supper, but curiously it does not specifically mention Leonardo or the title of the fresco. Nor does the poem even name Jesus or any of the disciples, but speaks only of “him” and “them”. The scene is described obliquely, the only direct reference to the account of the Last Supper in the Gospels being the mention of “Ölwald” or garden of olives (Getsemane).
The musical idea for this setting came from the notion of presenting an impression of a dramatic moment frozen in time, as in the fresco.
