The Age of the Wolf
Description
This publication contains the songs on Tellu Turkka’s (Virkkala’s) solo album Suden aika (The Age of the Wolf). This is a work whose individual pieces form a story, a tale in runo song. Instead of Väinämöinen, the main character in this tale is a girl, Marjukkainen, who grows from a naive little girl into a mature woman through tribulations.
I have fashioned the story on the basis of several old tales, translating it into the language of the Kalevala. The tales involved include Duke Bluebeard, the wise Vasalisa and the Maiden with no Arms. The songs in Suden aika are partly traditional songs from Ingria and Karelia and partly written by myself. I originally wrote the arrangements for four women, but they can be equally well performed by a choir.
Movements: Outro * Intro * Kosinta (Proposal) * Jopa jouvuit (Alas, you had to) * Manaus (Spell) * Etähäll on miun emoni (My mother is far away) * Tuulet (Winds) * Kevät (Spring)
