The Sparrow at Christmas Eve
Description
To Juvenalia Choir. Year of composition 2025.
First performance Dec. 7, 2025 at Olaus Petri church, Helsinki, Finland by Juvenalia Choir, cond. Júlia Heéger.
The poem Sparfven i julkqvällen (The Sparrow at Christmas Eve) by Volmar Lindman (1861–1939) from the anthology Dikter (Poems) (1885) got new significant publicity with the article by Anna-Stina Nykänen at Helsingin Sanomat newspaper on the 25th December 2025. The poem is a kind of an answer by the pioneer of animal protection, Volmar Lindman, especially to the well-known Finnish Christmas carol Varpunen jouluaamuna (The Sparrow at Christmas morning) by Otto Kotilainen (1868-1936), which is written to a poem by Zachris Topelius (1818-1898). As Júlia Heéger suggested me to set the poem to music, I immediately got excited.
